Day 55: Thu 16 Jul 26 - Mt Isa to Wonarah Bore Rest Area

Thu 16 Jul  26 - Mt Isa to Wonarah Bore Rest Area (412km)

7 to 26 Degree at Camooweal, clear with strong SE winds all day, easing in the evening.

We drove away at 0930, with no real destination in mind, eventually landing at a Wonarah Bore Rest area about 40km short of Barkly Homestead in the Northern Territory. Plenty of space to park, but no facilities, there are about 10 other vans here tonight.  I got talking with one fellow (also a keen photographer) and turned out he (Alan) and his partner (Colin Miles - also a he) live at Jervis Bay, where I had 3 postings in the Navy and lived for 8 years. More of a concidence, Colin was an ex-Navy cook (I never knew him), and is likely to have served on HMAS Melbourne (Air Craft Carrier) with my friend Alan from Canberra. It's a small world. The driving today was very pleasant along a wonderful highway until the NT Border, then it became a bit narrower and lumpy. Almost all traffic was heading east into a horribly strong headwind, but thankfully it was a very handy tailwind for us, so fuel consumption was down (about 15.1l/100km from Mount Isa). We have no phone reception where we are staying tonight, but thanks to starlink we have internet (and wifi calling), which also made today's drive more interesting listening to music, news and podcasts along the way. Apart from an occasional passing road train, its a very quiet rest stop.

Not sure if its the same sign, but Noel and I took a selfie here about 40 years ago when we drove back and forth between Jervis Bay and Darwin
